The 9th Annual MAT Conference is moving to Community Montessori in Jackson, TN!
On Saturday, September 16th, 2023 we will gather in Jackson, TN at Community Montessori School for our annual Our Roots conference to enjoy reconnecting with fellow Montessorians, engaging in breakout sessions, and being inspired by our keynote speaker.
“Weaving a Montessori World” is a phrase that you may not have heard directly in Montessori philosophy. However, weaving is a well-known practical life activity in the Montessori curriculum. In her keynote address, Darlene Abernathy-Neely will share reflections of how Montessorians surrender themselves through our unique journey, discovering transformative life lessons from the students, parents, and communities we serve. She will reveal how educators, students, parents, and communities weave a global world. Darlene has over 30 years of experience working with young children. She has experience identifying exceptionalities in African American children in the New York area and over a decade of experience as a Montessori professor, training teachers, and developing curriculums for schools nationwide. Darlene is the Academic Dean and Lead Primary Guide at NIA House Montessori in Nashville, TN. She also serves as a parent guide by setting up Montessori-inspired areas in homes. We are grateful to Darlene's service to the Montessori community in Tennessee over the past several decades and look forward to having her weave us closer through her inspiring reflections and wisdom.
In addition to over a dozen break out sessions on Saturday, participants will also be able to add on a literacy session on Sunday with Christine Lowry.
Using the Science of Reading with ALL Children Christine Lowry, Montessori NOW
This 6- hour learning opportunity begins with a 3-hour in-person session introducing the Science of Reading research, and the evidenced-based best practice for teaching reading to all levels using the Structured Literacy framework. With demonstrations using Montessori materials and curriculum, you will learn how to provide instruction in all five components of Structured Literacy to teach and reach all Montessori students regardless of level. There will be time for engagement and questions and real strategies you can begin to implement in your classroom on “Monday morning.”
This live session will be followed with three virtual meetings. In the first, you will be introduced to The Montessori-Based Formative Assessment that gives you the information you need to look at each student’s strengths and where they need growth. This will be an opportunity to talk about “the how” of using differentiated instruction to best provide for individual and unique needs of your students with the chance to share those “what if” questions you have about specific students.
The second virtual session will focus on efficient and practical ways to monitor your students’ progress and how to share this with families. Discussion of specific needs in your classroom will further develop your skills and confidence in your ability to teach every student.
In the third virtual session, we spend the entire hour putting all the pieces together as you share “I’ve got this kid who…” stories from your classroom.
