Executive function skills are essential life skills that help us plan, focus attention, switch gears, and juggle tasks. EF skills act like an air traffic control system in the brain, helping us to manage information, make decisions, and plan ahead. We need these skills at every stage of life. While no one is born with them, we are all born with the ability to develop these and other key skills. In this workshop, Courtney will explore the importance of EF skills, how these skills are influenced, and share specific information about each skill. She will then take a deep dive into strategies that parents and educators can begin using immediately to support EF skill development.
About the Presenter
I am currently the Student Support Specialist and Dyslexia Therapist for Amare Montessori. I started working at Amare in 2015 as the Toddler Guide. I came to Amare after working in the public school system, for several years, as a Special Education teacher. I moved into the Student Support and Dyslexia Therapy position in 2018. My son, Ivan, is in his last year in the Adolescent program at Amare. He has attended since he was in Primary.
Why do I do what I do? I, myself, have dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. I did not learn to read until I was in the third grade. I understand what it means to not be able to do something that everyone else seems to be able to do and I can’t. I love to teach. It is not only what I do, but it is who I am. I want to share my passion for reading with others. I want children to reach their full potential and not be held back because they don’t know how to read. This is one of my cosmic tasks.
